Your body is made up of around 70% water, so it’s no wonder being hydrated is so vital to our health. Being sufficiently hydrated plays an important role in digestion, detoxification, absorption of nutrients, temperature control, lubricating joints, concentration and so much more.

Here are a few reasons why it is so helpful for looking good and losing weight in particular and tips to help get more water into you.

The brain often confuses hunger with thirst

Trading out sugar laden or artificially sweetened drinks for water will help you stay hydrated without adding unnecessary calories. This study of over 18,300 adults found the majority of those who increased their daily consumption of  water by 1-3 cups decreased their total intake of calories by up to 205 daily, consumed up to 18 grams less sugar, and cut their sodium intake by up to 235 milligrams.

Water helps your heart pump blood around your body better, helping oxygen and other nutrients nourish your cells. A 5% drop in body fluids will cause a 25-30% loss of energy in most people, therefore you are less likely to go out and do that exercise you so dearly want to keep up.

Skin – Ever notice you seem to have more wrinkles after a big night drinking? That’s because dehydration deepens wrinkles. Being hydrated plumps up skin cells as well as flushing the body out  of impurities and improving blood circulation which all help improve your “gorgeousness” (skin).

Everyone has different hydration needs, based on weight, activity level, gender, age, health and environment. In a normal environment, water depletion by just daily living in say for example a 70kg adult is approx 2.5 – 3 litres a day. The food we eat contributes approximately 20% of this so drinking 2 litres of water should replace the remaining lost fluid.

Find it hard to drink that much? I do! I can go a day without drinking unless I have cues, rules and tricks. Here are a few I have learnt to get more water in…

Quick tip icon with text on blue button I start my day with hot water with a slice of ginger, topped up with a little cold water and lemon juice. I go back to bed to sip it. It took me a while to swap from tea but now I love it. Among other great benefits, it is a great alkaline start to the day and it works wonders for being regular!! See my post on the Goodness of Lemons

Quick tip icon with text on blue buttonOn cold days I just keep adding hot water to my morning piece of ginger or herbal tea.  there are Sooo many great herbal teas around these days and they are great hot or cold, green tea has so many amazing benefits – give it a go
