Have you been partying hard lately?

It’s true, I have been called by those near and dear to me a “weirdo”.

I cook things like baked Kale and Chick peas, mess up every recipe by replacing or adding something healthy, usually choose a salad over something that sounds much yummier,  buy organic, take vitamins by the handful. I do all these weirdo things because I want to live long and healthy. I want to give my body the best chance to fight all the terrible diseases that are so prevalent today such as cancer and Alzheimer’s which have touched the people most dear to me.

….. but I must confess I’m not always a goodie two shoes health puritan. We went to Melbourne two weeks ago and had so much fun, you  just can’t go to Melbourne and not indulge in the food and wine, and the odd Corona bucket!!!!

I started writing this on the plane coming home, feeling very guilty…

Alcohol – how can it affect your Liver?

drunk

Your liver is a robust organ and can usually cope with drinking a small amount of alcohol. However the liver can only handle a certain amount of alcohol at any given time, so if you drink more than the liver can deal with by drinking too quickly, or drinking too much, your liver cells struggle to process it.

Your liver also requires water to do its job effectively. When alcohol enters the body it acts as a diuretic and as such dehydrates you and forces the liver to find water from other sources. The severe dehydration is part of the reason why, after a big night of drinking you can wake up with a whopping headache.

When alcohol reaches the liver, it produces a toxic enzyme called acetaldehyde which can damage liver cells and cause permanent scarring, as well as harm to the brain and stomach lining.

Regular and heavy drinking over time can strain or upset the way alcohol is metabolised within the body, it affects the way your liver handles fat so your liver cells get stuffed full of it which can lead to alcoholic liver disease.

Fatty Liver Disease

There are no symptoms in the early stages of this disease – only a blood test and abnormal liver enzymes can signal an early problem.

What can you do?

Don’t drink alcohol every day. Daily drinking increases the chances of your body becoming tolerant to alcohol. Taking days off alcohol helps to give your body a break and time for your liver to heal itself

Eat well. Good nutrition can help to support your liver to function and plays a crucial role in your health.

Choose organic, it will lessen the load of toxins the liver needs to deal with.

Food for a Healthy liver

Lemons & Limes – These citrus fruits contain very high amounts of vitamin C, which aids the body in synthesizing toxic materials into substances that can be absorbed by water. Drinking freshly-squeezed lemon or lime juice in the morning helps stimulate the liver.

Grapefruit – High in both vitamin C and antioxidants, grapefruit increases the natural cleansing processes of the liver. It helps boost production of the liver detoxification enzymes that help flush out carcinogens and other toxins.

Green Tea – This liver-loving beverage is full of plant antioxidants known as catechins, a compound known to assist liver function.

Garlic – activates liver enzymes that help your body flush out toxins. Garlic also holds high amounts of allicin and selenium, two natural compounds that aid in liver cleansing.

Turmeric – helps boost liver detox, by assisting enzymes that actively flush out dietary carcinogens. (ps Usana’s Hepaplus & Procosamine for joints has turmeric – great anti-inflammatory)

Olive Oil – Cold-pressed organic oils such as olive, hemp and flax-seed are great for the liver, when used in moderation. They help the body by providing a lipid base that can suck up harmful toxins in the body.

Leafy Green Vegetables – One of our most powerful allies in cleansing the liver. Extremely high in plant chlorophylls, greens suck up environmental toxins from the blood stream. They have a distinct ability to neutralise heavy metals, chemicals and pesticides. They also help increase the creation and flow of bile, the substance that removes waste from the organs and blood.

Cruciferous Vegetables – Eating broccoli and cauliflower will increase the amount of glucosinolate in your system, adding to enzyme production in the liver. These natural enzymes help flush out carcinogens, and other toxins, out of our body which may significantly lower risks associated with cancer

Cabbage – Much like broccoli and cauliflower, eating cabbage helps stimulate the activation of two crucial liver detoxifying enzymes that help flush out toxins.

Beets and Carrots – Both are extremely high in plant-flavonoids and beta-carotene and glutathione; eating beets and carrots can help stimulate and improve overall liver function.

Avocados and Tomatoes – These foods helps the body produce glutathione, a compound that is necessary for the liver to cleanse harmful toxins.

Nuts Peanuts Almonds, Brazil nuts, Hazelnuts, Walnuts, Macadamia nuts. Being high in amino acid arginine, they aid the liver in detoxifying ammonia. Walnuts are also high in glutathione and omega-3 fatty acids, which support normal liver cleansing actions.

hepalus

USANA’s HepaPlus™ supplement contains numerous ingredients including milk thistle extract and alpha lipoic acid.

HepaPlus™ also contains a bioavailable from of turmeric extract to support healthy liver function. Turmeric is widely used in both Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine as an anti-inflammatory, to treat digestive and liver problems and skin conditions. In animal studies, curcumin, the pigment that gives turmeric its distinctive yellow colour can slow the changes caused by excessive alcohol consumption that lead to liver damage.  It can also lower the levels of two body enzymes that cause inflammation.
