So many of us have a strong addiction to sugar. It is scientific fact that sugar is as addictive as cocaine (here & here) releasing dopamine in the brain and giving us a feeling of pleasure. So quitting is not as easy as it seems.

I was one of those junkies, having a big sweet tooth and finding it hard to resist especially my morning and afternoon cake and also desserts. Knowing sugar provides empty calories, no nutrients and is increasing my risk of developing many health conditions has helped me wean myself off this horrid stuff and it certainly has helped my energy and wellbeing.

Not only is sugar empty calories, it causes weight gain through various mechanisms creating a vicious cycle of hormones which lead to uncontrollable cravings. By quitting sugar calorie intake will reduce dramatically and you won’t feel that uncontrollable hunger which will result in losing weight naturally and healthily.

But losing weight is not the only benefit from quitting sugar, here are

1. Losing your Energy Slumps

Do you find yourself reaching for a coffee and cake, coke or “something” to kick start your energy at that mid morning or afternoon slump? While we think that sugar hit is what saves us, it is actually what cases the energy slump in the first place.
When you eat a meal high in sugar or high gi carb your blood sugar is spiked so high that your body needs to pump in the hormone insulin to fix this dangerous level, however the body often over adjusts causing the low blood sugar levels to drop too rapidly and too low (i.e.  brain fog and tiredness). Consequently (stress) hormones are pumped out to correct this low level and these hormones create the uncontrollable cravings to eat something with quick energy. It is well documented that cancer feeds of sugar. All cancer cells produce energy by fermenting glucose (sugar), they can only use sugars for energy. Sugar causes inflammation which is thought to play a role in cancer and other inflammatory diseases. As sugar intake is likely a leading cause of diabetes. After years of spiking your blood sugar by over consumption of sugar and high gi carbs our cells become resistant to insulin, the body produces more insulin to hammer the glucose out of the blood and into the cells. Once you become insulin resistant you have a 90% of becoming diabetic. Keeping blood levels at an even range will lower risk of developing Diabetes. Links here

For many years fat was blamed for heart disease, this has been proven to be a lie created by the sugar industry scandal (more info here). It has now been shown that  that consuming too much sugar could significantly increase your risk of dying from cardiovascular disease. High Sugar intake raises bad cholesterol, triglycerides, blood pressure and insulin levels which increase risk of developing heart attacks, strokes and other serious coronary conditions.
